2021 opens with Georgia runoffs, clashes in Capitol
In our first CCL Weekly Briefing of 2021, we'd like to simply wish you "Happy New Year." But 2021 is already presenting its share of breaking news and tough challenges. Yesterday's runoff elections in Georgia gave the Democratic Party control of the U.S. Senate. Chances of fee-and-dividend legislation reaching the floor this year have improved, but with a 50-50 split between Republicans and Democrats, CCL’s bipartisan approach remains essential in moving meaningful solutions forward. And today, you've likely all seen news of the events at the Capitol. CCL staff in D.C. are hunkered down safe at their homes, and we're watching as developments continue to unfold. Today's events have been frightening and disappointing. A peaceful transition of power after an election is a hallmark of American democracy that all citizens and elected officials should respect. We hope for a swift and safe resolution to the situation. Even during challenging times, our CCL community makes it through because we have each other. To reflect on 2020 and look ahead to what else 2021 may hold, we invite you to read this new blog post from CCL Executive Director Mark Reynolds.

Take action this week
If you have a little time: Make a new year’s resolution to write a short letter to the editor this month. You’ll find lots of suggestions on what to write about in our letters to the editor topics resource, which you can download here. Need some guidance on writing an effective letter to the editor? Check out this training. If you have more time: Attend our January national meeting this Saturday. Our guest speaker will be Noah Kaufman, lead author of the 2019 Columbia University assessment of the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. The study confirmed the effectiveness of the bill from both an environmental and economic perspective. The call is Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. You can join virtually from your computer or phone. Details here. You can also connect with your nearest CCL chapter to take action in your community, or join one of CCL’s national online Action Teams to take action on specific topics like agriculture, health, faith, and more. Media: Op-ed on cash payments
Earlier this year, CCL volunteers co-authored op-eds with CCL Executive Director Mark Reynolds about the COVID relief payments to households, drawing comparisons to the idea of carbon dividend payments. With another round of relief checks on the way, CCL volunteer Tim Clancy updated that message in an op-ed in The Mining Journal in Marquette, Michigan. Tim even managed to get in an acknowledgement for his Republican congressman, Jack Bergman. CCL volunteers are regularly activating the “five levers” of political will in their communities. If you’d like to learn more about how to pull the media lever like this volunteer did, watch or read this training on writing and publishing op-eds.

Canada ramps up carbon price: The carbon-fee-and-dividend policy CCL volunteers helped to implement in Canada is being strengthened with a more ambitious price and quarterly payments to households. Read more. ICYMI, CCL helped pass climate bills: Just before the holiday break, Congress passed omnibus legislation that included three bills CCL supported as secondary asks in lobby meetings.
