John,
We are witnessing an unprecedented attack on our sacred institutions as domestic terrorists violently stormed the U.S. Capitol today, sparked by the flames that President Donald Trump and the gun lobby have been stoking for years.
Brady condemns in the strongest terms these violent events and the reckless elected officials who enabled them. President Trump and his allies in Congress alleging false claims of a ‘stolen election’ must decisively condemn the actions of these insurrectionists and end their assault on our democracy.
This was unequivocally an act of terrorism: Armed and dangerous insurrectionists used violence to undermine our democratic system and disrupt the lawful certification of the 2020 election. This follows similarly violent actions we have seen in Virginia, New Mexico, Georgia, Oregon, and Michigan in the past year. Make no mistake, John, our Constitution, rule of law, and democracy are under attack.
The violence we saw today is horrific, yet it is a logical endpoint to President Trump’s embrace of the dangerous insurrectionist rhetoric promoted by the gun lobby that has claimed for decades that ‘the guys with the guns make the rules.’ President Trump and his allies have endangered the lives of our elected representatives and their staff by inciting this angry mob.
Elected officials who have aided and abetted Trump in his actions to undermine the election also shoulder the responsibility for today’s violence. These representatives were sworn into office to uphold the Constitution and protect our democracy, but have instead undermined the very institutions that they were elected to protect. These Senators and Representatives have an obligation to immediately work to rectify this damage, cease efforts to cast doubt about President-elect Biden’s victory, and call for the full prosecution of the individuals responsible for this attempted coup.
We will continue to fight against armed vigilantism and gun lobby-fueled corruption. Together, we remain strong and steadfast in our mission to save lives. I am hoping that you and your families are safe tonight. Thank you for being our partner in fighting for a safer America for all of us.
In solidarity,
Kris Brown
Brady President
