Today, in our efforts to hold the President of the United States accountable to the Constitution, the American people, and the rule of law, we have reached a tipping point.

I said it this weekend: if President Trump truly pressured a foreign leader to make up dirt on one of his political opponents, we have crossed the rubicon. Even as we fight to get the full facts and the whistleblower complaint that Congress is legally entitled to, what we already know is damning enough. The President and his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani have admitted that they asked for help from a foreign power and apparently they see nothing wrong with that. And they have done so, even as the President withheld hundreds of millions of dollars of military support to that nation.

Friend, you probably know that I have been reluctant to go down the path of impeachment. It's a last resort, something that is deeply traumatic for the country, and not something to rush into, especially when Congressional Republicans have shown their cowardice by marching in lockstep with the president. But Trump's actions have left us no choice but to move ahead with an impeachment inquiry, as Speaker Nancy Pelosi formally announced today.

It is our Constitutional responsibility to put a check on the president and protect our democracy and elections, and that is what we're going to do.
