Dear John,
Georgia just made history, and already there are people trying to fight this wave of change. We are going to gather to talk about this moment tomorrow night— click here to join us. [[link removed]]
I’m still in shock. Last night, as we were waiting here for results after being up since 5am vote tripling with over 3,000 people at the polls, I could feel hope building within me. Was this actually going to happen?
I started organizing when I was 17. I grew up seeing how people treated Georgia and other states in the South. How we were only considered when it was time to come down and grow portfolios, how the people here have been written off for so long.
People from outside of the South haven’t seen what I’ve seen. They haven’t seen the organizing power of Georgians , the local groups—like 18byVote, Future Coalition, New Georgia Project Action Fund, Black Voters Matter, Peaches To The Poll, and Georgia League of Conservation Voters—who have worked hard for years to build up a community here that is fighting to be heard. When we arrived as Sunrise in Georgia and teamed up with these groups, we knew victory would only come out of uplifting the amazing foundation these partners have spent decades building.
I can’t help but be amazed and proud of all we’ve accomplished here. Over the past couple weeks, our movement helped make over 1.2 million dials to voters, send 1 million texts, knock over 8,500 doors, and register over 3,000 young voters.
If folks didn’t believe in the power of the South before now, we’ve made it clear never to doubt us again. Folks in and out of Sunrise risked their health and lives in the middle of a pandemic to organize. As we take a beat to celebrate this win, we’re also already thinking about what comes next.
Right now in DC, armed militia waving confederate flags have stormed the capitol, saying this is “their country” and that they “want it back.” This is what we’re up against. Fascist fearmongers using violence to spread hatred and resist the inevitable change that will strip them of their privilege and power.
Our work now is more important than ever. Join us tomorrow night, Thursday January 8th at 8:30pm Eastern / 5:30pm Pacific to celebrate Georgia with us and chat about the challenges ahead. [[link removed]]
See you there,
Shanté
