Dear John,
The 2020 election is, finally, almost over.
Raphael Warnock has been declared the winner in his race to flip one of the Georgia Senate seats blue. Jon Ossoff is on the verge of clinching the other seat. Mitch McConnell and the Republican party's control of the Senate is ending. Donald Trump is leaving. The next two years are up to us to shape and control our destiny.
With a new Democratic majority and allies throughout the House and Senate, we now have a pathway to accomplish our legislative priorities and dismantle the disastrous Trump legacy for Iranian Americans and all Americans, not to mention the world.
But remember — these elections were always a means to an end . We are not a partisan organization and we do not take for granted that Democrats will simply do the right thing. As we've witnessed with the COVID vaccine rollout — building an opportunity means little if the implementation is botched.
There will be many who will masquerade as allies of the new majority and who will work to maintain the status quo. So we will need to redouble our efforts to end the Muslim ban and inhumane sanctions against our families, return to the Iran deal and diplomacy, and maximize our seat at the table to advance peace and civil rights.
I want to thank the hundreds of NIAC Action volunteers, captains, and election coordinators who made thousands of calls and worked relentlessly to turn out voters to the polls . Your commitment and hard work has been an inspiration and confirmation that our community can organize at the grassroots level and punch well above our weight . And I want to thank all of the NIAC Action members who donated to NIAC Action PAC, and the Warnock and Ossoff campaigns via NIAC Action PAC, enabling our community to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for these victories .
After four years of Trump and ten months of quarantine, now is the time to celebrate (safely). And then, it's time to get to work. Together, we can bring real change over these next two years and build political power for Iranian Americans for years to come. I could not be more pleased to begin this new journey with you.
Thanks everyone,
Jamal Abdi
