Dear John,
When it comes to elections, young people are proof that there is strength in numbers. But our voices are being drowned out of the political process. That’s why we need sweeping reforms to fix a democracy that allows the wealthy and powerful to tip the scales in their favor.
Thankfully, it’s a new year and progressives on Capitol Hill are already cleaning house. On the first Monday of the year, the House of Representatives introduced H.R. 1, the For the People Act of 2021.
After four years of widespread corruption and exacerbated voter suppression, this legislation offers an historic opportunity to fix the way that government works and return power to people—including communities of color that have long been marginalized.
That’s why the incoming Biden-Harris administration must urge Congress to pass the For the People Act (H.R. 1) as a first priority.
In 2020 young people showed up at the polls in historic numbers, overcame suppression tactics, and voted for change. Now the new administration and Congress have the opportunity to finish the job by passing H.R. 1, to ensure that our small-dollar donations, votes, and values are represented.
The For the People Act is a once-in-a-generation package of proven reforms that would:
- expand and protect voting rights and access to the ballot;
- put ordinary Americans ahead of Big Money donors;
- end gerrymandering so that electoral districts are fairly drawn; and
- clean up government and hold elected officials to the highest ethical standards.
Young people are tired of a government that serves only the wealthy and corporate interests. We demand a democracy that is just and works for all of us.
Add your name today—tell Congress to pass the For the People Act as a first order of business in the new administration. Together, we can build the support we need to build a democracy that truly represents us.
Let's start 2021 strong,
Charlotte Hancock
