Friend,
Last night’s election results in Georgia make it clear that when we invest in communities, invest in organizing, and listen to and invest in the people―our future is brighter. But even as we celebrate Rev. Raphael Warnock’s historic U.S. Senate victory and Jon Ossoff’s presumptive historic win, we’re still reeling from Trump’s blatant attempt to rig our presidential election.
This past weekend, Trump was captured on tape, pressuring Georgia’s Secretary of State to overturn the state’s presidential election results. And today, as Congress is meeting to confirm the country’s presidential election results, over 150 GOP members of the House and Senate are joining Trump in his attempted coup.
By trying to block certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory, Republicans are subverting the will of voters and mocking our country’s true patriots: election workers and volunteers who risked their lives in a pandemic for our votes to count.
We must take swift action to protect our democracy. Sign now to demand an immediate criminal investigation and possible charges into Trump’s election tampering.
Trump repeatedly pressured Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to declare that Trump had won more votes in the state than Biden. And he urged Georgia officials to 'find' enough votes (11,780) to overturn the outcome, breaking both Georgia state and federal laws that prohibit solicitation of election fraud.
This flagrant abuse of power is just the latest in a series of increasingly desperate acts Trump has taken to try to hold onto the presidency. He previously attempted to subvert the will of Michigan voters by pressuring election boards and Republican state elected officials to go along with his election fraud scheme (both were unsuccessful).
And it should come as no surprise that Trump is targeting Black and brown communities with his election fraud conspiracies, including Wayne County in Michigan and Fulton County in Georgia.
We got a window into Trump’s coercive conversations with election officials, as Trump tried to extort Raffensperger by threatening him with criminal consequences if he did not doctor the election results. Among his statements in the rambling call: “So what are we going to do here, folks? I only need 11,000 votes. Fellas, I need 11,000 votes. Give me a break.”
We’re not giving Trump any breaks. We fought hard for over a year to impeach Trump for his illegal behavior, and now we must demand an immediate criminal investigation into these new election code violations.
No one is above the law, especially not the President. The clearer we state that as a country, the less likely we’ll face a demagogue worse than Trump in 2024 or beyond.
Please sign the petition: Trump has broken the law. He must be investigated and charged.
In solidarity,
Rashida
