The season around the holidays tends to slow a bit when it comes to news. But apparently, 2021 didn't get the memo. As much of the world slowly awakened to the new year this week, it became clear just how quickly things were already moving. Indeed, today Congress is set to take up one of its most consequential acts this session, as lawmakers vote to certify Electoral College results. Though this should be a rather procedural matter, all signs indicate that it won't be entirely quiet, with drama and political theater unfolding both inside and outside of the U.S. Capitol. unsubstantiated claims of election fraud , at least a dozen members of the Senate (and more in the U.S. House) have come forward to say they will oppose certification of the electoral college results unless fellow lawmakers approve a formal audit of the general election. Little surprise Texas plays a role in all this: Sen. Ted Cruz is one of those Republican senators opposing certification. And on the streets of D.C., a large group of Trump supporters (including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, among others) will be staging rallies in a display of support for President Trump. While neither effort is likely to affect the certification of Joe Biden as President-elect and Kamala Harris as Vice-President elect, that doesn't necessarily mean there won't be a longer term impact. This is one
of many stories we continue to track, in addition to growing concerns about
