Mikie Sherrill :: U.S. Congress

Today, Congress will count the Electoral College votes and certify the results of the 2020 election.

I know there have been a lot of troubling developments around this process in recent days, so I want to give you a rundown of what's happening today:

Congress will reconvene at 1:00 p.m. for the Joint Session to count the electoral votes.
As President of the Senate, Vice President Pence will preside and open each state's electoral votes in alphabetical order.
As you may have heard, a group of congressional Republicans is planning to formally object to certain states' votes.
If both a member of the House and a member of the Senate object in writing to the same state, the Joint Session will recess and each chamber will have two hours of debate.
The debate will be followed by a vote on the objection.

The potential objections could cause the certification process to last well into the night. Depending on the number of objections, the House could potentially recess and continue the certification tomorrow.

It will be a long day for our democracy, but there is light on the horizon. These attempts to undermine our free and fair elections will not work. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will assume office in just two weeks. I thoroughly look forward to working with them to advance an agenda focused on helping the American people through the crises we face.

The attempts from numerous Republicans, including President Trump, to undermine our free and fair election without merit or evidence is a violation of their sworn oaths to the Constitution. It is a shocking breach of their duties.

I am approaching today the way I approach every day in Congress -- with every intention of upholding my sworn oath to our Constitution, honoring our democratic process, and certifying the legitimate election results.

Thanks,

Mikie
