Dear John,
We won! Thanks to so many of you who lent your support, law enforcement now has an important tool to unmask human traffickers hiding behind fake businesses and anonymous shell companies.
Until now, someone could literally claim the business was owned by Daffy Duck and it would be perfectly legal to do so. This made it hard for law enforcement to trace trafficking networks through financial transactions and to shut them down for good. Instead, they were left arresting middlemen and sometimes even the victims themselves.
But in the final days of 2020, Congress enacted legislation requiring businesses to disclose who actually benefits from their operations. This is a huge victory that will make a real dent in trafficking, particularly in the illicit massage industry where thousands of women are exploited and trafficked in the United States.
It took more than a decade. It took a great deal of hard work and compromise. Most of all, it took people who cared; people like you. We are grateful.
In Solidarity,
