Hey John,
The Animal Liberation Online Assembly is an ongoing virtual gathering of animal rights activists. At the first assembly of this year, we are bringing you the Online Assembly: What industrialization Means for Dairy Cows in China (and for us). Today, China has become the world’s largest dairy importer and third largest dairy producer, and dairy has surpassed soybeans in both consumption volume and sales revenue. We will be hearing from Xiaoqian Hu, a legal anthropologist and law professor, to learn about the legal and socioeconomic factors that drove this transformation, what it has meant for farmed animals in China, and what opportunities and challenges advocates face in seeking to reduce animal abuse in China. As the root of societal exploitation of farmed animals lies in a global economic system built upon “free market” and “private property,” we’ll conclude the talk by reevaluating the “property” status of animals and the notion of “property” more broadly. Please join us this Saturday, January 9th, at 11AM with the Zoom link http://dxe.io/ALOAzoom.
If you're interested in getting more involved in this active community, apply to become a chapter member at dxe.io/apply.
Here are the other events we have happening this week (all will be taking place in Pacific Time, unless otherwise noted).
- Tuesday, January 5th, 6:30 PM: Kick-Start 2021: Time Management and Organization Training - Struggling with time management? Craving more organization in your life? Wanting to kick-start 2021 and make progress on your goals (activism or otherwise)? Then this event is for you! As activists, we're faced with immense problems that need solving. There is so much work to do. With good organization and time management skills, we can get more done and bring about animal liberation even sooner! Join DxE organizers Almira Tanner and Erica Wilson for this fun and informative training on Zoom. See the event page details for the Zoom instructions.
- Sunday, January 10th, 11 AM: Community Park Clean Up - After a successful beach clean up a few weeks ago, we are back to serve our community! Join us this coming Saturday to pick up trash, big and small, and ensure that the area is cleaned for everyone, human and nonhuman animals to enjoy. We share this environment with animals and they deserve to have a clean and free habitat as well! We will meet at Lincoln Way & 9th Ave in San Francisco, CA 94122 to meet and brief. We will wear masks, physical distance, and have hand sanitizers ready. Supplies will be provided but you are welcomed to bring your own.
- Tuesday, January 12th, 11 AM: Together Against Factory Farming: January Day of Action - Join us for a physically-distanced coalition rally and press conference at the State Capitol where we will ask our elected officials to support a moratorium on the construction of new factory farms and slaughterhouses in California! The evidence is clear, factory farms and slaughterhouses have devastating impacts on the planet, the animals, and the public. Instead of addressing this issue, our state has directly funded the expansion of big ag in California and is continuing to support this terrible industry. That is why next Tuesday, we are coming together from a wide array of backgrounds and movements to support our vision of a California with #NoMoreFactoryFarms. We are meeting at Capitol Mall & 9th St in Sacramento, CA 95814.
