** Reflections on the Exceptional Service
& Legacy of Dr. Mark Appelbaum
------------------------------------------------------------

** Former YSP Advisory Committee Chair & Member
------------------------------------------------------------
With deep sadness and appreciation, the Foundation for Child Development reflects on the extraordinary contributions that Dr. Mark Appelbaum made to our Young Scholars Program (YSP) and to the field of psychology. From 2006-2020, Dr. Appelbaum served on the YSP Advisory Committee and was Committee Chair for six years. With his insightful and thoughtful guidance, Dr. Appelbaum helped to identify and support early-career scholars engaging in policy and practice relevant research that focused on the early learning and development of young children.

Before joining the YSP Advisory Committee, Dr. Appelbaum was already a prominent leader in his field, serving as Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the University of California, San Diego and as founding editor of the American Psychological Association’s (APA) prestigious Psychological Methods journal and editor of the APA Psychological Bulletin. Dr. Appelbaum’s expertise in psychometrics and his dedication to mentoring students were the very reasons why the Foundation first sought his assistance with and eventual leadership in YSP.

As member and Chair of the YSP Advisory Committee, Dr. Appelbaum shared a fierce commitment to promoting diversity and equity in research scholarship. Over the years, Dr. Appelbaum was consistently generous with this time and expertise in supporting YSP as he reviewed hundreds of research applications and helped to guide the committee’s recommendations for dozens of research awardees. As Chair, Dr. Appelbaum’s thought leadership successfully shepherded the committee during a pivotal period as YSP transitioned from a focus on children within immigrant families to a focus on the early care and education workforce.

His legacy will continue in the YSP scholars he championed with frank and constructive feedback and exceptional mentorship. Dr. Appelbaum’s wisdom and kindness were cherished by YSP scholars who benefited from his contributions to their careers and ongoing professional development.

We send our deepest condolences to his family and his students. As both a professional colleague and an honest and caring person, he will be greatly missed. The Foundation is thankful for his outstanding service and counsel.
