Dear Supporter,
Last week the US Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act for 2021, and below certain hot-button issues was the inclusion of landmark anti-money laundering reform. The provision bans anonymous shell companies, pervasive in the United States, and represents not only the United States’ biggest anti-corruption push in years, but also a massive boost for human rights efforts around the world.
The Sentry's advocacy work in concert with coalition partners was a driving force behind the passage of this reform, the Corporate Transparency Act. Our Co-Founder John Prendergast highlights the importance of the critical provision in a new op-ed published yesterday.
"With the implementation of this historic legislation, no longer will the world’s worst dictators be able to hide their finances behind U.S. shell companies. Finally, we’ll be able to track their assets that much more easily – and begin holding them to account for their human rights atrocities."
To read more about the provision and its effects on human rights, read the full op-ed.
Thank you for your support and happy new year from The Sentry.
Sincerely,
Ian Schwab
