Breaking news, John: it’s just been announced that Rusten Sheskey — the Kenosha police officer who shot Jacob Blake in the back seven times, paralyzing him — will not be charged.
That’s it. With the stroke of a pen by the DA’s office, justice has been taken away from Jacob Blake. Justice has been stolen from his family, his community, and Black people everywhere who — like Jacob — live in fear of police violence.
This work isn’t easy. And moments like this one really knock the wind out of you. It’s deflating. Infuriating. Heartbreaking. So I’m telling you now that it’s okay to feel whatever it is that you’re feeling right now. That’s normal.
But no matter what, we can’t give in fully to that despair. We can’t throw our hands up, call it hopeless, and turn away. Because if we do that, then another Rusten Sheskey will come along, abuse his power, and get away with it.
That’s what makes reform-minded DAs like Larry Krasner, Stephanie Morales, Jose Garza, and Chesa Boudin so important: they give us a chance to tip the scales of power and accountability back in our direction.
Thank you for everything. Please keep up the fight, and do what you can to take care of yourself tonight. We have a lot of work to do.
