Take Action Now Law Enforcement News Authorities ID Teen Shot And Killed At Boyle Heights Park; Suspects Sought Authorities Monday identified a 15-year-old boy who was shot to death at a Boyle Heights park, as investigators continued their efforts to solve the crime. The shooting was reported about 3:20 p.m Saturday at Prospect Park in the 600 block of Echandia Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Ever Cutzan of Los Angeles died at the scene, according to the coroner’s office. According to the LAPD, four suspects approached the boy in a car, and one of them — described only as a man in his 20s — got out and shot the teen. No further descriptions of the suspects or vehicle were released, nor did investigators comment on a possible motive for the crime. Anyone with information on the case was urged to call 877-LAPD-247. MyNewsLA.com 3 Injured In South Los Angeles Drive-By Shooting; Suspect Not Yet Identified Three people injured in a drive-by shooting in South Los Angeles on Monday evening. The incident happened around 5:20 p.m. at 120th Street and Main Street. Three individuals were struck by gunfire by an unknown shooter and were all in stable condition at last check, police said. It’s unclear what led up to the shooting, or what the motive may be. Police have not yet identified a suspect, according to LAPD Officer Mike Lopez. CBS 2 LAPD Investigating Beverly Grove Shooting The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating a shooting that happened in the Beverly Grove neighborhood on New Year’s day. Two people were injured in the incident around 2:30 a.m. in the 6340 block of Maryland Drive, according to LAPD Wilshire Division officials. Both were listed in stable condition, LAPD said. No information was available on the nature of their injuries. Police on Sunday said no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, which was described as being possibly gang-related. Surveillance video obtained by KTLA shows multiple people apparently taking cover behind a car as what sounds like several gunshots ring out in the background. The people then get in the car and drive away, according to the footage, which was recorded at the same location and time the shooting was reported. The investigation is ongoing and no further details were available. KTLA 5 Anti-Mask Protesters Try To Force Way Into Stores At Century City Mall Shoppers and employees at the Century City mall on Sunday became the target of anti-mask protesters who forcefully spread their message to anyone wearing a mask -- which was everyone at the mall because masks are required. "We see the protesters with the megaphones saying no masks. Take off the masks. Open back up L.A. All lives matter," said Johnathan Cabrera who works at Century City Mall. Cabrera says he was shocked by the group of about 30 and says he's rarely had issues with anti-maskers before. Samuel Braslow, a reporter with the Beverly Hills Courier, covered the protest and says this group has been targeting Los Angeles stores the past few weeks, including chain super markets and pharmacies. The LAPD was called to the mall, but some eyewitnesses tell us they were surprised the protesters weren't asked to leave or cited. The LAPD tells ABC7 their role on Sunday at the mall was just like any other protest: facilitate first amendment rights, keep the peace, and not intervene unless necessary. ABC 7 Youth Counselor Beaten To Death After Trying To Break Up Fight Near South LA, 6 In Custody A youth counselor was beaten to death by a group of teens after he tried to break up a fight at a youth center near South Los Angeles over the weekend. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to a call of a fight breaking out from the Wayfinder Family Services, a private nonprofit youth center, before 10 p.m. on Saturday. Deputies say 25-year-old David McKnight-Hillman, who is a counselor at the youth center, was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. During the investigation, seven teens were identified as the suspects in the deadly attack. Six of the suspects are in custody with the seventh suspect on the run. Two of the suspects, both 18 years old, are being charged with murder, LASD said. As of Monday night, LASD does not know the motive for the deadly attack. FOX 11 Teen Found Fatally Shot In Crashed Vehicle In East L.A. A 19-year-old man was found fatally shot in a crashed vehicle in East Los Angeles early Monday, officials said. The incident was reported just before 3 a.m. along the 1200 block of South Hicks Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash, and officers found the victim seated on the driver’s side. He was unresponsive and suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso, and was eventually declared dead at the scene, officials said. He was only described as being 19. The motive is unknown and authorities have not released any information about a potential shooter or shooters. It is also unclear what led up to the crash and shooting. KTLA 5 Driver Sought In Fatal South LA Hit-And-Run A man was found dead in South Los Angeles early Monday morning after an apparent hit-and-run crash, the California Highway Patrol said. The man, who officers said was in his 50s, was struck at about 5:20 a.m. in the 1200 block of West 94th Street and died at the scene. His name was not immediately released. “Suspect info is limited,” Officer Franco Pepi, a CHP spokesperson, said. “What we do know is there was a light colored four door sedan, which we are suspecting may have struck the pedestrian that was last seen traveling westbound on 94th Street toward Normandie.” Anyone with information was asked to call CHP’s West Los Angeles Area office at 310-642-3939. CBS 2 Winnetka Man Who Assaulted MAGA Hat Wearer In Hermosa Beach Gets 4 Years In Prison A San Fernando Valley man who attacked a patron wearing a red hat bearing “Make America Great Again” in Russian was sentenced Monday, Jan. 4, to four years in prison. David Delgado, 33, of Winnetka pleaded no contest in March to a felony count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury for pummeling the hat-wearer in a Hermosa Beach restaurant bathroom after learning the meaning of the Russian phrase. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Thomas Sokolov handed down the sentence. A Los Angeles Superior Court commissioner had previously ordered Delgado to attend anger-management counseling and Alcoholics Anonymous sessions weekly up until his sentencing. On Sept. 2, 2019, during the Labor Day weekend, Delgado approached the victim in a bar restroom. He asked the meaning of the Russian writing on the hat and then punched the victim repeatedly in the face, causing him to fall to the ground, Hermosa Beach police Sgt. Robert Higgins said. Los Angeles Daily News St. Louis Homicide Rate In 2020 Highest In 50 Years On the last day of 2020, St. Louis leaders read 262 names aloud from a church podium — each name representing a person killed in the city over the previous 12 months. Their deaths brought the city's homicide rate to a level 30% higher than any of the past 50 years, records show. "2020 has been a very difficult year on so many different levels," St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson said at the 29th annual New Year's Eve vigil for homicide victims. "But we're all here today because we are hurting from the violence in our community. We are hurting from the trauma it causes." St. Louis' homicide rate hit 87 murders per 100,000 residents in 2020, the highest on record since 1970. The figure exceeds the previous top rate of 69 set in 1993, when the growing number of killings made headlines in local and national news. That year registered the most total homicides in the city — at 267 — but St. Louis has about 87,000 fewer residents now. This past year also brought St. Louis County its most homicides — 91 — in the past 15 years, according to the latest numbers from the Missouri Highway Patrol. The county's homicide rate, however, was far lower than the city's at about 9 homicides for every 100,000 people. St. Louis Post-Dispatch Public Safety News LA County Reports 9,142 New COVID-19 Cases, 77 Deaths The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Monday reported 9,142 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 77 additional deaths, bringing countywide totals to 827,498 cases and 10,850 deaths. Health officials attributed the low number of cases and deaths to reporting delays over the New Year’s holiday weekend. There were 7,697 COVID-19 patients hospitalized, 21% of whom were being treated in intensive care units. “The high number of COVID-19 patients in our hospitals is distressing not only for those who have COVID-19, but for all others in the county who need acute care during this time,” the department said in a release. According to the department, when the latest surge began in early-November, there was an average of 791 people hospitalized daily with COVID-19. On Jan. 2, the three-day average number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 was 7,623 patients. CBS 2 Short On Equipment, Ambulances And Space, L.A. County Medical System Reaches ‘A Point Of Crisis’ The coronavirus crisis battering Los Angeles County’s medical system is reaching increasingly desperate levels, with healthcare providers running low on equipment, ambulance operators being told not to bring patients who have virtually no chance of survival to hospitals, and officials scrambling to ensure they can provide enough lifesaving oxygen for critically ill patients. The number of COVID-19 patients in the county’s beleaguered hospitals has hit an all-time high, according to data released Monday, and officials say they expect the situation to worsen in the coming weeks as a new surge of people who were infected during the holidays become ill. With available resources being stretched thin, hospitals are trying to discharge patients as quickly as possible to free up space for those most in urgent need of care. But there are limits to this strategy because the number of new cases continues to grow so rapidly. Los Angeles Times California Posts Another Single-Day Record For New Coronavirus Cases: 74,000 After a relative New Year’s lull in confirmed infections, California posted a new single-day record for coronavirus cases Monday, logging more than 74,000, according to a Times tally of local health jurisdictions. That is 11% higher than the previous record, when 66,726 cases were registered Dec. 28. The state is now averaging about 37,000 cases a day over the last week, down from a high of about 45,000 in mid-December. But the situation is still far worse than the beginning of last month, when 14,000 cases a day were recorded. California also posted its sixth-highest daily tally of COVID-19 deaths: 379. That helped pull up the average number of COVID-19 deaths over the last week to 353 a day, the highest number yet. In Los Angeles County on Monday, an additional 79 coronavirus-related deaths were reported and an additional 10,851 infections. The county is now averaging 184 deaths a day over the last week — the equivalent of someone dying of COVID-19 every eight minutes — and about 13,500 cases a day, a count expected to grow because many testing sites were closed for the New Year’s holiday.
