John,
All eyes are on Georgia today, where two runoff elections could swing the balance of the Senate from Republicans to Democrats, with major implications for the Biden-Harris administration.
Social Security Works has endorsed Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff―and our members have raised more than $50,000 directly to their campaigns, and made thousands of phone calls.
If Warnock and Ossoff win, Democrats will control the Senate by just one vote―with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris tipping the balance to the Dems. This means that the Senate will need to pursue agenda items that can unite the party.
The Democratic Senate majority is ideologically diverse, but there’s one issue that unites them: Expanding Social Security. In 2015, the Senate voted on an amendment expressing support for Expanding Social Security, which was introduced by Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin (WV) and Elizabeth Warren (MA).
The Manchin-Warren amendment presented a challenge for some Democratic Senators: If you don’t fit ideologically between Manchin and Warren, how can you be a Democrat? Expanding Social Security would be a BFD―and a way to show voters that we can deliver material improvements in their lives!
Whatever the outcome in Georgia, we’re going to keep fighting to expand & protect Social Security this year! Rush a $5 donation today!
Together, we’re going to keep our Social Security system strong, and make sure every American can retire with dignity!
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
