As we embark on a new year, I wanted to come to you directly to share our strategy for the next few months to advance our movement for Medicare for All. This email is longer than usual, but I hope you take a few minutes to read it and join in.
We’ll rewind and start with the good news. Back in February 2019, Rep. Pramila Jayapal introduced H.R. 1384, The Medicare for All Act of 2019, on the House floor. Over the next year, volunteers across the country organized – knocking on tens of thousands of doors, holding thousands of events. All of this work helped the bill reach 118 co-sponsors – that’s over half the Democrats in Congress!
There were four historic hearings in Congress and a leading presidential candidate proudly calling for Medicare for All. As a result, Medicare for All is one of the most popular proposals in the country.
The not-great news is that 118 is still not enough votes to pass the bill in the House. But a big opportunity is on the horizon. With the new Congress beginning, the Medicare for All Act will be reintroduced and all cosponsors – old and new – will need to reaffirm their sponsorship or sign on for the first time.
That’s why we devised a plan to organize on the ground in districts across the country to secure as much support, or even more support, for the bill than when it was first introduced.
Through our District Leaders program, we’ve trained and coached volunteers who have stepped up in over 215 Congressional Districts to work with other activists in their district to devise a plan of action to strategically pressure their member of Congress to become a cosponsor and prepare for a meeting with their representative.
We know that organizing on the ground is what it will take to win this fight for the long haul. Here’s how you can get plugged in right away to support:
In addition to our District Leaders program, we launched the California Guaranteed Health Care for All (CalCare) campaign to pass single-payer health care in the state.
As one of the largest economies in the world, we know that winning in California will help move the needle nationally. We are organizing car caravans on Saturday, February 6 as part of a statewide day of action. You can RSVP to join or host an event here.
As always we are continuing to host Movement Builder trainings (sign up for one here) and Medicare for All 101 webinars (sign up for one here) to continue to grow and deepen this movement.
This pandemic has put the importance of our fight for Medicare for All even further into focus. If you’re ready to get involved and get plugged in as a volunteer, our door is always open. Just reply to this email and we’ll help you get started.
Thank you for reading this far, and feel free to reply to this email with any questions.
Proud to be in this with you,
