Friend, I want to share some big news about the impact you’ve made with your support.
Moments ago, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House of Representatives will begin an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.[1]
Let’s be perfectly clear -- this would not have happened if it weren’t for the tireless activism and organizing by concerned Americans like you. Many top Democrats were reluctant at first to pursue an impeachment investigation, putting temporary partisan calculations before their constitutional duties.
But together, we spoke out loudly and clearly, to demand that Congress fulfill its constitutional duty, and hold the executive branch accountable.
Today alone, over a dozen members of Congress, including civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, called for an impeachment inquiry for the first time. This is clearly a turning point in our movement for accountability. We’ll need to turn up the heat on any remaining lawmaker -- Republican or Democratic -- who doesn’t yet support a full impeachment inquiry.
That’s why we’ll be counting on your help to keep the pressure on -- and ask every member of Congress: will you side with this president who ignores our democratic norms, institutions, and laws? Or will you do your constitutional duty and defend the values that unite us as Americans?
We’re updating impeachmentinquiry.org with the latest public statements -- see where your member of Congress stands on an impeachment inquiry here >>
You can also read our case for an impeachment inquiry -- and find information about the next steps in the process -- in our report >>
Common Cause has also been closely following the ongoing Trump/Ukraine scandal -- which started when a national security whistleblower exposed that Trump made an unknown “promise” to a foreign leader.
We still don’t know the full story -- and we’re demanding that the Trump Administration stop covering up the whistleblower’s complaint, and make it available in full to Congress. Sign our petition here >>
What we do know is that Trump has admitted that he asked the President of Ukraine for help with his 2020 reelection -- which would be an illegal campaign contribution from a foreign national. Common Cause jumped on the case -- filing a formal complaint with the Federal Election Commission and Department of Justice last night. Read our complaint >>
But even as we’re making MAJOR progress towards our demand for an impeachment inquiry, we aren’t letting up on any of our other important work for democracy.
Just yesterday, we won a major victory against media consolidation -- with our successful lawsuit to overturn a bad decision by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that would make it much easier for big corporations to shut out independent journalism.
That’s on top of how we helped stop right-wing media conglomerate Sinclair Broadcasting from buying hundreds of local TV stations -- and we’ll be counting on your advocacy to keep up the fight. Read our statement >>
And, in the past few weeks, thousands of Common Cause members have called or written their members of Congress to make sure they fund two important priorities -- securing our elections against foreign attackers and a fair, accurate 2020 Census. We’ve gotten some, but not all of the funding we need -- and your advocacy was a crucial part of getting us this far.
Plus, we’re hard at work on some pivotal state campaigns to build a better democracy from the ground up. We’re still watchdogging the drawing of new state legislative districts in North Carolina, after our victory in Common Cause v. Lewis a few weeks ago. And, we’ve just launched our new Let Texas Vote campaign, to cut down systemic barriers to the ballot box in that state. And, we're preparing our Election Protection effort in states like Pennsylvania before their election this November -- which will help lay the groundwork for our work to protect voters in the 2020 elections too.
It’s been a busy few days -- and I want to thank you again for making this important work possible. I’m so glad to know we can count on people like you to do what’s right for our democracy.
In common cause,
Karen Hobert Flynn, President
and the team at Common Cause
P.S. We want to hear how Common Cause members like you are reacting to today’s news -- reply to this message or email me at [email protected] with your thoughts. We couldn’t do any of this without you -- and I want to make sure your voice is heard. Many thanks.
