Free fun for readers of all ages at this weekend's Oswego Literary Festival

Sunday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Oswego Village Hall

Stock up your bookshelves with fall reading for yourself and your young book lovers at this weekend’s Oswego Literary Festival, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Oswego Village Hall.

The Oswego Literary Festival is bigger and better than ever this year, with more than 50 authors from around Illinois scheduled to appear, plus book discussions for adults and children, live readings from featured authors, live music, food trucks from Umbrella Azul and TCBY, a book raffle, and a children’s area featuring children’s authors, activities, and a bounce house.

Meet authors representing dozens of genres, including mystery, horror and ghost stories just in time for fall, plus sci-fi, romance, poetry collections, memoir and non-fiction on a variety of topics. Bring your young bookworms who will find everything from children’s picture books about airplanes to YA thrillers and fantasy.  Chat up authors, buy their recent releases, get your copy autographed, and take part in the literary process with activities like three-minute poems and more. Here’s a sample of the authors at this year’s event:

  • Patricia Rockwell, publisher at Cozy Cat Press and author of Firecrackered, part of the Essie Cobb Senior Sleuth series
  • Jo Fredell Higgins, local historian and author of several titles chronicling the history of Naperville, Aurora, Geneva and Montgomery
  • Shanna Simpson, author of children’s book Payton is Afraid of Dirt, about a child living with obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Mary Hennen, author of The Peregrine Returns, a richly illustrated conservation success story from the University of Chicago Press.
  • Ray Ziemer, author of The Ghost of Jamie McVay, a coming-of-age ghost story set in the Chicago west suburbs
  • Songju Ma Daemicke, award-winning author of children’s book Cao Chong Weighs an Elephant, available in six languages

This year’s Oswego Literary Festival is sponsored by Naperville-based publisher Sourcebooks and will include book discussions from two Sourcebook authors. At 11 a.m., hear from Nic Joseph, author of suspense novel The Night in Question, and at 12:30 p.m. bring the kids for a discussion with Nancy J. Cavanaugh, author of middle-grade book Elsie Mae Has Something to Say.

Plus, aspiring writers will find resources to inspire their next book projects. Talk craft with other local writers in your genre, and meet representatives from The Republic of Letters, a new Fox Valley-based writers’ studio offering classes and editing groups.

This is the eighth year for the event, which is produced annually by the Oswego Public Library District and the Village of Oswego’s Cultural Arts Commission. Each year, it attracts dozens of authors from around the region, and this year, the festivities will spill outdoors around Village Hall, too, weather permitting.

Books are for sale at the event directly from the individual authors. Cash is recommended although many authors accept credit and debit cards via Square.

The Oswego Literary Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29, at Oswego Village Hall, 100 Parkers Mill, Oswego. Entry is free. Books are available for purchase direct from authors.
