• Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced yesterday Texans will be required to make an appointment before visiting “most Senate offices” during the 2021 legislative session. Brandon Waltens has the details.
      
• The Senate will also limit attendance in the public gallery to 100 people on opening day (1/12/2021), Patrick announced, and they will all be required to submit to a COVID-19 rapid test.
       
• Rules governing access to the Senate and Senate offices for the remainder of the session will be voted on by senators in the first week of the session.
     

• Protocols announced last month for the Texas House say all opening day attendees in that chamber—whether members-elect, family, media, or members of the public—will be asked to take a COVID-19 screening test before entering, but stopped short of mandating it.

• Texas lost a great patriot at the end of December. Longtime activist Carroll Maxwell passed away Dec. 26 at the age of 92. Erin Anderson wrote about his commitment to conservative causes.
      
• “My world is consumed by my faith, my family, my friends, and politics,” Maxwell told Texas Scorecard in 2017. He was an icon in Collin County’s conservative Republican politics for decades, and he actively worked to involve others in the political process.
       
• “He loved God, his family and friends, and his country so very much,” said his daughter, Karen Maxwell Prejean.
       
• Carroll Maxwell never took America’s greatness for granted, and he was recognized by his peers for a lifetime of service to his country and state with a Conservative Leader Award in 2016.

• Brad Johnson of The Texan has reviewed legislation limiting the “emergency power” authorities of the office of the governor and other officials.
     
• There are measures requiring special legislative sessions – ranging from legislative tweaks to a constitutional amendment. Another measure would prohibit state and local officials from designating businesses as “essential” and “non-essential.” Meanwhile, bills have been filed to ensure nursing home residents can have family visits.

• In a new commentary, Shiela Domstead encourages her fellow Texans to start the new year remember that it is within their power to make a difference for liberty.

GOP senators and representatives – including Texas’ Sen. Ted Cruz and numerous House members – have said they will object to certifying the results of the Electoral College vote until there has been an investigation into claims of fraud and manipulation. Texas’ senior senator, John Cornyn, has been silent on the issue.

Should Sen. Cornyn join Sen. Cruz and the others in opposing the Electoral College results until an audit of the election has been completed?
