Happy New Year, John!
As we begin a new year we want to take a moment to thank you for all the support you give us. Thank you for your generosity, your time, and your unwavering commitment to gun violence prevention. With your help, we were able to achieve so much, even through the tumult of 2020. Here are a few of our proudest accomplishments:
- We saw five major gun responsibility bills pass through the Washington State Legislature, including legislation to centralize our background check system, prohibit guns in childcare centers, and create the first-of-its-kind Office of Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention.
- The state budget included a whopping $14.3 million for investment in gun violence prevention programs!
- We hosted our first-ever virtual luncheon, highlighting the contrast between gun safety progress in Washington state and the inaction at the federal level.
- We hosted our first-ever virtual summit, allowing us to share firearm surrender and protection orders best practices with a national audience.
- Eighty-five endorsed candidates at the state and federal level won their seats, strengthening our gun responsibility majorities in Olympia.
- Our country elected the strongest gun safety ticket in history!
None of this would have been possible without people like you, whose dedication and understanding helped our team weather an incredibly difficult year. It’s because of you that we feel so hopeful about what 2021 will bring.
As we set our intentions for the year ahead, we are committed to holding our elected officials accountable, protecting and building on our legislative successes, supporting community-led violence prevention work, and continuing to examine our own biases and practices in order to become meaningful accomplices in the fight to dismantle white supremacy. Thank you for standing with us again this year.
Wishing you a year of hope, health, and progress.
