Trump has taken to threatening a state official to overturn the election.

Dear Friend,

Donald Trump pressured the Georgia secretary of state to overturn certified election results in a shocking phone call on Saturday.1

The media is minimizing it, but let’s call it what it is: an attempted coup.

Let’s be ultra clear: It doesn’t matter that Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger rejected Trump’s demands, or that Trump will likely fail. We cannot set a precedent of a president getting away with trying to strong-arm a state into overturning election results.

What we heard on the tape of the phone call between Trump and Raffensperger is unprecedented.

It’s not just that Trump lied over and over again, claiming that thousands of votes were recorded from dead people, hundreds of thousands of votes were shredded, thousands of people from outside Georgia voted.2

After Raffensperger and the Georgia state attorney on the call refuted each of Trump’s lies, Trump turned to threats, attacking Stacey Abrams' extraordinary voter turnout effort and making legal threats toward Raffensperger. He said if Raffensperger didn’t release confidential voter information that is protected by law, he would publicly insinuate that Raffensperger is hiding fraud.3

Trump kept saying, “I need to find 11,780 votes”—enough to overturn the Georgia results. No matter that the tally has been certified, no fraud has been found, and that states have full constitutional power to handle their own elections. Trump is intent on getting the results he wants, no matter who he has to hurt or what lie he has to tell, like a presidential mafia boss.

As renowned journalist Carl Bernstein said, Trump’s actions over the weekend are "far worse than Watergate.”4 Even if Trump fails in this effort, if Congress lets him get away with this attempt, others will challenge, twist, attack, and undermine free and fair elections based on this terrible precedent.

Congress must move immediately to impeach Trump and hold him accountable for his terrible abuse of power, and more than 40,000 Demand Progress members have already emailed their representatives in just 24 hours. Please help us send a strong message that America won’t stand for Trump’s efforts to overturn the election.

Will you donate now to help convince Congress to impeach Trump?

Thanks for standing with us.
