PFLAG Connects

Dear John:

Welcome to our first issue of the PFLAG Connects newsletter for 2021! We hope you and yours have had a safe and healthy start to your year. We are all eyes on the future here at PFLAG, but if we've learned anything from the recent past it's that connection is key. Each week, we'll be bringing you different ways to do that through our pillars of Support, Education, and Advocacy.

So let's kick off 2021 right with new opportunities--including the first Something to Talk About Live broadcast of the new year!

PFLAG Connects: A program of PFLAG National

Support

PFLAG Connects meetings are continuing!

When we launched PFLAG Connects last March, we did so in service of keeping our members and supporters closely connected to our PFLAG Chapter Network, at a time when we all needed a little connection and support. Here we are, ten months later, and PFLAG Connects is going strong for chapters all across the country. Our chapters are there for you, whenever you need them, and PFLAG Connects is a great way to get to know them. So whether you want to join a local chapter meeting, or see what's going on in another location in the U.S., there's a meeting that will be right for you.

Visit pflag.org/connect to learn more about this program, and to find a chapter meeting for support!

Three Steps to Being a Better Self-Care Advocate (While You're Stuck At Home)

Just because you’re staying in doesn’t mean your ally skills should slow down. So stay safe and get engaged now!

  1. Learn: Read this article on the history of self-care and these 12 quotes from Audre Lorde so you can better understand and explain why taking care of our mental and physical health is an integral part of activism.

  2. Watch: Check out this previous episode of Something to Talk About Live with PFLAG National Executive Director Brian K. Bond and Jean-Marie Navetta where they focused on post-election self-care. Also check out this iconic video from Angela Davis on radical self-care, posted as a part of a video series by AfroPunk in 2018.

  3. Share: Use social media to share with friends and family your plans to take better care of yourself in 2021. Post a list of self-care activities, like this one from GirlBoss, to get the conversation started with groups you are a part of online.

National Day of Service

Advocacy

Join the National Day of Service: Monday, January 18th

The National Day of Service for this year's Inauguration will celebrate and honor the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's an opportunity for all people to unite and serve at a time when the global pandemic calls on all of us to work together and support our communities. No matter where you are, you have an opportunity to give back and the agency to do so. Most volunteer activities only require an hour or two of your time, and all events will be virtual or socially distanced, in accordance with CDC protocol.

So sign up now to either participate in an event or, for PFLAG chapters, host one of your own! And be sure to find an event to participate in by checking the full list of opportunities

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, January 7th at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM for Something to Talk About Live. This week, we’ll be discussing, "'Chosen families' ruptured: How COVID-19 hit an LGBTQ lifeline," from NBC News, by Julie Compton

You can watch us live on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and now on LinkedIn, too!

For more information, including a link to this week's article and the questions, visit http://www.straightforequality.org/something-to-talk-about-live-january-7-2021.

Remember: We're here to help. Find us all at pflag.org/about/our-people.

Let’s stay safe, stay healthy--and stay connected.
