Hello friend,
I wanted to be among the first to wish you and all those you love a happy and healthy new year! Every January brings us a moment to reflect on the past and look ahead to the future … and, like you, I am glad 2020 is behind us.
This past year has been challenging and heavy, by any objective standard. But, as with other dark moments in the LGBTQ community’s history, we have pushed through, persevered and accomplished many important achievements. I am so proud of you and us as a movement.
Over the next few weeks, the fruits of our hard work in 2020 will begin to come to life as the pro-equality candidates we elected in November become the pro-equality leaders who will fight for us and who we will hold accountable. Thanks to your support, we may very well secure a pro-equality majority in the United States Senate in the next few days.
These upcoming months are filled with boundless possibilities, especially with you as a member of our Human Rights Campaign family. Together, we have the power to chart a bold path forward for our community, for our country and for our collective world.
As we move into our forty-first year as a civil rights organization on the frontlines of our movement, we must be more innovative and more hard-working than ever before. The Human Rights Campaign’s founders envisioned an organization that would be able to respond to the challenges and threats directed at the LGBTQ community, and we still strive to accomplish that dream.
Now, we are the leaders, and it is on us to build on the Human Rights Campaign’s mission and push it even further — leaving no member of our community behind. We must see ourselves in others, lead with empathy and understanding and fight for everyone — because none of us will find freedom until we achieve it for all.
We are in the business of cultural change, and passing laws is just one way we do that. In 2021, we can achieve even more thanks to your commitment and determination throughout the past year. Thank you once again for being the backbone of our successes.
As I close out, I hope you know just how appreciative I am of you. You lived into our community’s strength and resilience … and you made a difference.
We are the future, friend, and the future starts today. Onward to better days and transformative change for us all. Happy New Year!
In Unity,
