Last week, we had the opportunity to work with dozens of inspirational non-profit leaders in Western Massachusetts at our Leadership Lab sponsored by MassMutual. MassMutual has a vision for building thriving communities through their Live Mutual initiative; as part of this program, they are committed to strengthening the leadership and problem-solving capacity of non-profit leaders.

And, MassMutual recognizes that leadership isn't built in a day, so they've worked alongside us to recruit and train their employees to serve as coaches for our non-profit participants over the next six months as they practice and apply what they learned at the Leadership Lab.

I was inspired by the passionate advocates I met for the arts, youth programs and engagement, housing access, racial and social justice, and a variety of other important philanthropic causes. It is always a blessing for me to see the hope these leaders have for their futures and their organizations. I look forward to watching them transform their community as they unlock their own potential and the potential of those around them.

Courage is a lot like getting in shape, I think. Is it painful to face our fears? It is. Would it be easier to stay home and keep our heads down. It would. But if we summon even an ounce of courage, that momentum can carry us forward.

This experience has been not just wonderful but it’s been empowering. I was hesitant to come and participate; I felt sending a couple staff would be sufficient. Then I thought about it and...

I made a decision to come and it was the best decision I ever made because it was an incredible experience.

...At the end of the day, we all felt like we were brothers and sisters. The wonders of humanity were so present.

In Her Latest Chapter, Carly Fiorina’s Philanthropy Focuses on Empowering Nonprofit Leaders

Some might know Carly Fiorina from her recent presidential bid on the Republican ticket. Prior to this, however, Fiorina was a major star in business. After graduating from Stanford and receiving an MBA from the University of Maryland and an M.S. from MIT, she rose through the ranks at AT&T, becoming the first female officer. Fiorina later led AT&T’s spin-out of Lucent Technologies. And in 1999, Fiorina was recruited to Hewlett-Packard Company, becoming CEO and president.

For her efforts, Fiorina is worth $60 million, according to some estimates. She engages philanthropy with her husband Frank, supporting select organizations in their Virginia community and beyond, including United Way Silicon Valley and Year Up. "I started in an unlikely place. I came to business as a secretary in a nine-person real estate firm. Landed there because I just dropped out of law school," Fiorina told me in our recent conversation.
