John,

I wanted to take a moment to wish you a happy, healthy New Year – and to thank you for supporting our work to protect kids and save lives in the United States and around the world. Despite the enormous challenges we faced in 2020, your support has helped us make incredible progress.

2021 marks the 25th anniversary of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids

This is a truly pivotal year for our organization and our movement. We are setting bold new goals and working harder than ever to defeat the predatory tobacco industry and win this fight to save lives.

Here are some of our top priorities for 2021

In the U.S., where youth e-cigarette use remains at epidemic levels and an emboldened tobacco industry is exploiting COVID-19 to market its dangerous products, we will:

  • Fight at the national, state and city levels to eliminate all flavored tobacco products, including the flavored e-cigarettes that are fueling a new youth addiction crisis and menthol cigarettes that the tobacco industry has used to target Black youth and communities for decades.
  • Work to address the enormous health disparities caused by tobacco use by ensuring proven tobacco control policies reach all communities and all Americans get the support they need to quit tobacco.
  • Work with the incoming Biden Administration to put science and public health first – as President-elect Biden has promised to do – and make the fight against tobacco a national priority
  • Continue to educate the public about the increased risks smokers and vapers face from COVID-19 – and why there has never been a better time to quit using tobacco products.

Around the world, where the tobacco industry runs rampant and tries to bully low- and middle-income countries, we will:

  • Fight to increase tobacco taxes in Mexico, Ukraine, Philippines and other countries.
  • Support the incredible momentum for provincial smoke-free laws in China, and campaign for Mexico to pass a national smoke-free law.
  • Launch a worldwide initiative to mobilize youth in the fight against tobacco.
  • Spearhead a global campaign to expose front groups that help the tobacco industry fight life-saving public health policies.

And so much more.

Meanwhile, our Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) builds on the lessons learned from 25 years of effective tobacco control work and applies them to other public health challenges. This year, GHAI will:

  • Collaborate with international and local partners to support the successful rollout of COVID-19 vaccines.
  • Support the adoption of healthy food policies in Argentina, Colombia, the Caribbean, South Africa, and Uruguay.
  • Accelerate progress on trans fat elimination in East Africa by working on a regional agreement to restrict use of this toxic food component.
  • Continue to provide technical assistance and legal reviews for countries’ Civil Registration, Vital Statistics and Identification Management systems in regions around the world.

This is just a glimpse of what your support makes possible. As always, we will keep you updated on these and other campaigns throughout the year. And make sure to stay tuned to our website and follow us on social media for the latest.

In the meantime…

Help make sure we have the resources to win:

Thanks for all you do. Here’s to the next 25 years.

Sincerely,

Matt Myers
President
