2020 was a challenging year for human rights, to say the least. We saw COVID-19 running rampant in ICE detention facilities, exposing individuals and families and putting them at severe risk. We watched in horror as police in our communities and across the country wielded violence against peaceful protesters. We witnessed asylum-seekers being denied protection and their claims ignored, as they were locked up for simply seeking safety. And as I write, children and their families are at severe risk of deportation, as the Trump administration takes advantage of its final days in power.
Next year can be better for human rights — but it won’t happen on its own. If we can scale up our research, publish our findings broadly, build a bigger movement, and apply constant pressure on decision-makers, we can keep the focus on human rights in 2021.
