John, my team and I are reading through your hopes for 2021. [[link removed]] No matter our background or our zip code, we're united by common hopes for the new year -- a just recovery, relief for our neighborhoods, and a brighter future for ourselves and loved ones:
"I hope that my daughter can have a normal end to her elementary school, with everyone in class & 5th grade graduation."
"Economic recovery for NYC, to see friends and family and for Covid-19 to be eliminated."
"My husband's job being secure (he works in the tv/film industry); my son being able to go to school in person (he is in middle school); having a government in place that puts humans at the center of the agenda ( not profits and politics)."
"Getting back to work creating oil paintings in my studio downtown."
And beyond an end to the pandemic, so many of us are hoping against hope for big, bold solutions to our city's long-term crises:
"Fund the MTA with congestion pricing and a millionaires' tax. More bike lanes, and keep people from parking in them. Enforce the plastic bag ban."
"Cutting the NYPD budget. Our city is being held in a stranglehold by their wasteful spending and dangerous behaviors."
"Having equality in hospitals for black women in particular."
"More responsive, compassionate governing to protect the ever-growing number of vulnerable people: housing protections plus MORE housing for lower income people; and more attention to poorer children not having adequate computer resources."
"That we aggressively take action on climate change before it's too late. Without a livable planet nothing else matters."
2020 revealed many divisions that our city leadership has long ignored -- but I know that together, we can unite across our shared hopes and deliver new, transformative, progressive leadership for New York City in 2021.
