For too long, Facebook and Google have been exploiting their gatekeeper status to further entrench their monopoly-like power. Free from competition and accountability, these companies have felt no obligation for the well-being of their users or our democracy.
In order to maximize profits, Facebook and Google have exploited our personal data, crushed potential rivals, and boosted disinformation and extremism. And until now, they’ve gotten a free pass.
But the tide is turning. In recent weeks, the government has brought five major lawsuits against Facebook and Google for their various abuses of power, sending a long overdue message that the era of impunity for Big Tech is coming to an end.
Now, we should be clear-eyed: litigation is not a silver bullet. These lawsuits won’t stop social media giants from amplifying hate and conspiracy theories to serve their toxic business model.
We must continue fighting on every front to hold Big Tech accountable. If you’re able, please pitch in today to help us keep up this important work.
