High among them are our families, our freedom, and the opportunities of a new year." -Ronald Reagan Happy New Year! As 2020 draws to a close, we have an opportunity to look back at one of the most challenging years we have ever faced as a country. Personally, 2020 has pushed me and stretched me in ways that I never could have imagined only one year ago. One of my favorite writers, Deseret News Opinion Editor Boyd Matheson, just authored an article entitled “20/20 insights for the year 2020: It’s all about resilience and humility.” Boyd writes that 2020 taught the world humility, and in a phrase I love, explained that “humility creates space for curiosity, creativity and cooperation.” When 2020 started, my New Year’s resolution was to elect Republicans. Notwithstanding a pandemic, forcing us to cancel in-person caucus meetings and conventions, we had greater success than we ever could have imagined. Our Republican base helped put a checkmark next to that resolution, and we saw incredible victories, including winning back a seat in Congress. This year, my resolution is to create a strong Republican party that makes sure Utah Republicans are elected for years to come. When a state Republican party is weak and fractured, Republican candidates lose. This is why Colorado and Nevada turned blue. Unfortunately, 2020 has seen the development of another blue state surrounding Utah: Arizona. In years past, our state party was perceived as weak and fractured--one of the reasons statistician Nate Silver made headlines by predicting that Utah could turn purple as early as 2024. I am determined to make sure that never happens. A strong Utah Republican Party is the key. My goal in 2021 is to help more people understand the principles that inspire the Republican party. We need to help more people -- those under the age of 30, and those moving to Utah -- to understand those principles and join us. We need to ensure that the overwhelming Utah Republican Party victories of 2020 occur again in 2022, and 2024, and beyond. Will you join me? Together, let’s resolve to make 2021 a year of growth and strength for the Utah Republican Party. Derek E. Brown Food Drive Reminder There is still time to contribute to the state-wide food drive. Continuing through January 4th you can donate non-perishable food or provide financial support to the Utah Food Bank. We still have a collection box (for food) at the UTGOP headquarters and you can also find collection sites on the inaugural commission website. Read More Utah Republican Party 15 W.
