Happy National Voter Registration Day! All across our country today we are celebrating democracy and raising awareness about voter registration and participation. It's a wonderful tradition, but it's a shame we haven't done more as a state to help Texans vote.

Instead of debating online voter registration or how to secure our elections, we had to fight bills like S.B. 9, which would have criminalized simple, honest errors on voter registration forms, made it harder for voters with disabilities or language barriers to vote, and strongly discouraged political participation.

I'm glad we killed that bill. Texas is better off because we were successful. But there is so much more work to do.

I firmly believe that a healthy and vibrant democracy with an informed, engaged, and active electorate is paramount to our mutual success as a people. That’s why I passed legislation to break down barriers to participation and make it easier to vote.
