Democracy prevailed in 2020, but we have another fight on our hands in 2021 as our opponents attempt to overturn all the ground we gained working for a more equitable and fair democracy. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s next:
Pass automatic voter registration everywhere.
One in four eligible voters isn’t registered. A decade ago, the Brennan Center proposed automatic voter registration (AVR). So far, our advocacy has moved 19 states and the District of Columbia to implement AVR, but we need it to be adopted nationwide.
Pass the Democracy Restoration Act and expand voting rights to everyone.
Currently, there are more than 5 million people barred from voting due to a felony conviction. The right to vote is a fundamental tenet of our democracy — states must ensure that if you’re a voting-age citizen living in the community, you get to vote.
Pass the Deceptive Practices and Voter Intimidation Prevention Act and stop voter suppression.
States are getting more creative with their attempts to suppress voter turnout. The Brennan Center is fighting to end voter suppression in all its forms and penalize and correct false information that prevents voting or voter registration.
Can you donate $25 to help pass these important reforms?
This work would not be possible without your support. The forces working to disenfranchise voters and undermine our democracy are organized and more emboldened than ever. We need to have the resources to fight back and pass systemic reforms that allow people to do something fundamental to our democracy — vote.
