Arizonans’ Inspiring Actions This Year

Hello John,

This year brought no shortage of challenges. But that didn’t stop Arizonans of all ages from helping one another and supporting our communities.

From donating masks to health care workers to increasing STEM activities in the classroom, building workspaces for remote learners and much more, Arizonans continue to rise above obstacles and inspire us all.

Here are just a few examples:

11-year-old Everly helped put more than 4,000 meals on the table for those in need by hand-making beaded ornaments to raise money for St. Mary’s Food Bank.

Flagstaff School District’s Chef Sky Atwood and her team partnered with community food banks to supply families with backpacks full of food and arranged meal pick-up sites for those in need.

Grace, a student at Willow Canyon High School, sewed masks for hours on end and donated them to hospitals and anyone in the community who needs one.

Three Glendale teens—Neha, Lauren, and Tony—launched a fundraising campaign and raised more than $20,000 to help families pay for internet as many turned to distance learning and working.

Phillip Blanks, former high school football player and retired U.S. Marine, this summer dove and caught a three-year-old boy who was dropped out of a burning building in Phoenix. D’Artagnan Alexander, 42, ran in the building and saved a young girl.

Leone Tynes, a Maryvale teacher, secured STEM kits for his students after winning a Society For Science & The Public. The kits will help his students practice their coding skills and build robots.

A team of six girls from Magee Middle School in Tucson placed first in an international competition. Magee placed in the top 15 in all five categories, going up against more than 300 teams in the middle school division.

Steve Weinberg, a Scottsdale businessman, is building desks in his garage for students who are remote learning and don’t have their own spot to sit and study. He has built 15 desks so far.

15-year-old Jenna LiBrandi, from Peoria, rallied her fellow classmates to help send 154 hand-drawn holiday cards to residents at Solstice Senior Living in Sun City.

Two young siblings from Glendale put together gift bags with drinks and coloring pages and donated them to more than 100 police officers.
