If I had to sum up my experience at ISN in one word, it would be empowering.
Since high school, I knew I was called to social justice work, but what was my role in this diverse movement? The ISN staff hired me as an intern four years ago and has been helping me to answer this question ever since. In the last year, I started working as the communications intern,
which has allowed me to focus on my role as storyteller.
I feel empowered writing articles and reflections that raise awareness about social inequality, highlight the Ignatian family’s fight for justice, and uplift voices from historically marginalized groups. I have recognized the power of communication and collaboration in living out a faith that does justice.
Discovering my voice in the social justice movement is an ongoing process only made possible by the loving and supportive environment at ISN. The staff have become family. I’ve met many of their partners, children, and pets! They have created a space ripe for growth where asking questions, thinking creatively, and taking risks is encouraged. Working at ISN has taught me that I can make a difference when in community with others, and it has been integral in cultivating my confidence not only as an advocate for social justice but as a person.
Being an intern at ISN has also helped me discern my call to education. As a future high school English teacher, I want to create a similar loving environment in my classroom where my students, especially those of color, feel confident in their abilities. I strive to empower my students to use their voices as a means of dismantling oppressive structures and enacting positive social change in their communities, just as ISN has done for me.
