AFSCME Family,
I think we’re all eager to turn the calendar and put 2020 behind us. But as we look back at this gut-wrenching year, we can be so proud of how we responded to adversity. When things were at their worst, we gave our very best.
The challenges will continue next year, but there is also reason for hope and optimism, as the COVID vaccine starts to be distributed.
I am in awe of the courage and stamina shown by AFSCME members since the very beginning of this pandemic. You persisted and persevered. You adapted and innovated. When your communities needed you most, you did not flinch. You put yourselves at risk to put the safety of your neighbors first.
Despite all the obstacles created by the pandemic, the business of our union did not stop. We continued to organize, with more than 32,000 public service workers joining the AFSCME family. And over the summer, we pulled off a successful, first-ever virtual International Convention.
Since March, we have fought relentlessly for federal aid to states, cities, towns and schools, so that we can maintain the front-line public services — and save the public service jobs — that are on the chopping block. That struggle will continue in the new year, as we need more investment in our communities to get control of this pandemic and breathe new life into the economy.
Thank you for all your effort and sacrifice. At a moment of so much uncertainty, when so many aspects of our lives have been disrupted, you have been a steady hand keeping our communities running. I hope you have a safe, peaceful and happy new year.
In solidarity,
Lee Saunders
AFSCME President
