** Happy News Year!
------------------------------------------------------------
As 2020 finally draws to a close, I want to thank you for helping to make our daily independent global news hour possible.

I really do believe that those who are concerned about issues like the widening gap between rich and poor, Medicare for All, racial justice and the climate crisis are not a fringe minority, not even a silent majority, but the silenced majority—silenced by the corporate media.

That's why you tune into Democracy Now! each day, to hear the stories you won't hear anywhere else.

Today is your last chance to donate to Democracy Now! in 2020. If you've already made your contribution this year, thank you so much. But if you haven't had a chance to donate yet,
now is your time. ([link removed])

Right now a generous donor will TRIPLE your gift to Democracy Now!, making your tax-deductible donation three times as valuable.

DONATE TODAY & TRIPLE YOUR IMPACT! ([link removed])

The hunger for independent news has never been greater.

As we move into 2021—a critical year not only for the United States, but for the world—Democracy Now! will continue to bring you stories from the front lines of the movements that are defining this moment in history.

Yesterday, we spoke to Dr. Camara Phyllis Jones and Dr. Joia Crear-Perry, two leading Black doctors fighting racial disparities in healthcare. They co-authored The Washington Post opinion piece, “Say her name: Dr. Susan Moore.”

Dr. Susan Moore, also a Black physician, died from COVID-19 after posting a video from her hospital bed describing racist treatment by medical staff. Her chilling message was compared to the video of George Floyd begging for his life as he was killed by Minneapolis police.

"...racism is not limited to healthcare. It’s not limited to policing. It’s in education. It’s in housing. It’s everywhere. It’s woven throughout the fabric of this nation. It’s foundational in our history," said Dr. Jones.

Democracy Now! is often the first news outlet to cover a story—and we stay with it.

In September, we interviewed whistleblower Dawn Wooten, a nurse at the Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia, who accused the ICE jail of sending women prisoners to a local doctor who performed unwanted hysterectomies and other non-consensual procedures on them. Women in the jail call him “the uterus collector.”

This week we returned to Irwin County Detention Center, where dozens of women have now joined a class-action lawsuit against ICE over medical abuse allegations. We spoke to Azadeh Shahshahani, co-counsel for the women plaintiffs at Irwin, as well as two of the women named in the lawsuit, one still jailed at Irwin and the other deported.

"I’m calling for the shutdown of Irwin ... I’m calling for changes. ... [so] people don’t go through the same thing like we went through, because I’ve got four U.S. citizen children, and my children went through hell," said Wendy Dowe, who was forcibly sterilized and then deported to Jamaica.

If you think stories about corporate and government abuses of power need to be heard, make your gift to support Democracy Now! today ([link removed]) .

Free speech is democracy's last line of defense. We must demand it, defend it, and most of all, use it—now!

That's why we're asking for your donation today, when we need it most. ([link removed])

With your support, Democracy Now! is training the next generation of independent journalists through our internship and fellowship programs. Our education program—which has gone virtual because of the pandemic—teaches hundreds of students about fearless, truth-seeking journalism in this time of disinformation and lies.

All of this is only possible with your financial support.

You can click here to donate right now ([link removed]) , or call us at 1-888-999-3877 (toll free in U.S.) or +1-212-431-9090 (dial 2).
