Dear John,
I don’t have to tell you how difficult this year has been for the disability community. At the same time, there has been so much real, tangible change for the better even in the midst of some of the hardest struggles we’ve had to face. As we enter 2021, will you join us in keeping this momentum going?
Those in power have tried over and over again to take away our hard-won victories, but people with disabilities fight on. In 2020, we got the FDA to finally put in place a ban on the skin shock devices used at the Judge Rotenberg Center — the first real progress towards ending this form of torture that we have seen in decades. We continue to fight to end police violence, make community living available to everyone, and provide access to health care and self-determination for all. In June, we celebrated 30 years of the ADA despite 30 years of attempts at undoing it. Against all odds, we have refused to go backward, and we have taken on all who have tried. With your support, we can continue to push forward together, towards true justice, self-determination, and inclusion for all people with disabilities.
We have been honored to fight alongside you this year. Having the support of our community means that we show first-hand that there is room for everyone at the policy table. As 2020 draws to a close, we’ve taken a moment to celebrate this year’s victories, and now we’re looking ahead to the work that remains to be done. We have our sights set on bigger policy goals, and while no one policy is going to end structural oppression, every victory moves us closer to a better world. While we’re getting ready to ring in 2021, there’s still time to support ASAN through your end-of-year giving, and join us in working toward those victories together.
Let’s get started.
With gratitude,
Julia
