The hard reality is that each story we shared this past month is just a glimpse into the lives that DC kids in poverty face every day. And, while we will keep fighting to find solutions for every family we meet, we know that real systemic change requires a much greater effort.
It’s why we fought for and succeeded in:
- Increasing DC’s investments in mental and behavioral health services – especially during the pandemic.
- Creating an Ombudsperson for Children to help resolve day-to-day problems and systemic issues for DC’s foster children.
- Making sure older kids could stay in foster care throughout and following the public health emergency.
- Creating a new agency that would take a stronger approach to making rental housing safer and healthier for DC’s families.
- Ensuring students can continue their education if they are too sick to get to school through the Home and Hospital Instruction Act.
We don’t know what our world will look like in six months, but we do know that far too many children and families will need Children’s Law Center fighting by their side.
With gratitude and hope for a healthier 2021,
