Friend,
This Independence Day, I am still heartbroken and outraged. On a day dedicated to celebrating our nation’s independence from tyranny and subjugation, I think about the children in cages on our southern border and the families across our country living in fear of a racist, bigoted Administration.
Our nation’s founding was marked by a stated commitment to liberty, equality, and justice, but nearly 250 years later, we have yet to fully live up to those ideals. Those values are not reflected when migrants are held for months in overcrowded, unlivable detention centers, and when immigrants in our communities live in constant fear of being ripped from their loved ones.
So on this Fourth of July, I hope you take time with family -- and to find joy -- but we cannot look away.

No more should the lives and basic rights of immigrants, of black and brown children and families, be subject to negotiation, moderation, or compromise. Only then will we be able to truly celebrate a nation reflective of our founding values.
So, let us harness the spirit of Independence Day to fight for dignity, humanity, and the preservation of families. >> [link removed]
