John, just weeks ago the Bahamas were slammed by Category 5 Hurricane Dorian, killing at least 43 people and leaving over 70,000 Bahamians homeless.
Our government's response has been DESPICABLE. A 12-year-old girl was separated from her godmother at the Miami airport. 100 evacuees were kicked off a ferry to Miami and barred from entering the country.
And now Trump is refusing to offer short-term help to Bahamian evacuees through the Temporary Protection Status (TPS) program, which was created precisely to help people who have survived a major disaster.
Our Bahamian neighbors cannot live in wreckage without access to food, clean water, or medicine. Join us in urging Congress to step in and get Bahamians the help they need.
The Temporary Protection Status (TPS) program was passed into law for EXACTLY this type of heartbreaking scenario -- to give people somewhere to recover from a major disaster while it's unsafe or inhumane for them to return home -- and time and again Democrats AND Republicans have approved it.
But Trump's extreme anti-immigrant agenda means even now in the most obviously desperate circumstances he's been completely unwilling to help -- claiming with ZERO evidence that there may be "very bad gang members" and "drug dealers" among evacuees.
Trump's cruelty against black and brown people knows no end. The good news is pressure is mounting.
Members of Congress are throwing their support behind H.R. 4272, the TPS for Victims of Hurricane Dorian Act.
We need Congress to step up where the Administration is failing. Add your name to join the multi-organizational push to get Bahamian evacuees the support they need.
Thanks for all you do,
Paola Luisi, Communications Director
