Fellow American, Not long ago, New York magazine posed the question: “When Did Everyone Become a Socialist?” To say “everyone” is a gross exaggeration. But it’s clear that socialism has made inroads in America, especially among the young. A recent poll showed that 70% of Millennials are either somewhat likely or extremely likely to vote for candidates with socialist positions. We have seen some of this in recent elections. Why is this? For one thing, too many young Americans have not been taught what socialism really means or the dismal history of its failures wherever it has been tried. For another, too many are no longer being taught about America’s great heritage of liberty and about the importance of the Constitution to freedom. This is because of the “progressive” Left’s increasing success in hijacking American education at both the K-12 and college levels. The New York Times’ “1619 Project” is a prime example of this. The mainstream media praised this effort to subvert the proper teaching of American history, and its lead essayist even won a Pulitzer Prize. In the face of such well-financed efforts to indoctrinate the young and undermine informed patriotism, Hillsdale’s educational outreach efforts have never been more urgently needed. In fact, a recent survey identified Hillsdale’s national outreach as the best means to defeat the Left on the battlefield of education. Will you make a gift to Hillsdale today to expand its educational outreach on behalf of liberty during this critical year for our nation? We have set an ambitious goal to raise $4,500,000 before midnight on December 31 from generous online supporters like you. Your gift will help Hillsdale produce additional free online courses, expand the circulation of Imprimis, launch more Hillsdale-affiliated classical K-12 charter schools across the country, and so much more as part of our new Project to Defend Liberty Nationwide by Reaching and Teaching Millions. I’ve included a secure link for your convenience here: https://secured.hillsdale.edu/hillsdale/give-calendar-year-end-2020 As you know, Hillsdale College refuses to accept one penny of taxpayer support—not even indirectly in the form of federal or state student grants and loans. This means that our national educational outreach is entirely dependent on the generosity of private citizens, like you, who understand the importance of education to liberty. In the face of recent successes by the Left, we must remember: it is never too late to preserve and defend liberty through education. Your partnership would honor us in the critical year ahead.
