See you never, 2020!
Grifting, Scamming, and Self-Dealing: A Year in Review
Despite unprecedented circumstances this year, Allied Progress never stopped shining a light on corruption in Washington.
Best for Predatory Industries: Kathy Kraninger
First, her agency allowed predatory payday lenders to push potentially millions more families into the debt trap. Then, Kathy gave debt collectors a green light to harass consumers without limit. All in the middle of a pandemic!
Most Anti-Student: Betsy DeVos
Betsy’s education department tried to shut down a website that helped defrauded student borrowers seek relief. Their complaint? It was “too easy” to use.
Stingiest Stimulus Provider: Steve Mnuchin
Treasury Secretary Mnuchin let banks garnish stimulus checks to cover existing debt.
Most Ghost-Like: Eugene Scalia
While workers were facing unsafe working conditions that exposed them to COVID-19, the Trump administration’s labor secretary was nowhere to be found. OSHA has yet to issue a binding emergency standard for employers to keep their workers safe during the health crisis.
Biggest Billionaire Bailout: PPP Loans
The Trump SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans were supposed to help struggling small businesses stay afloat during the pandemic. Instead, billions of dollars went to special interests like private jet and oil companies while mom and pops in communities of color were largely shut out.
Our Work Continues:
The Trump presidency is almost over, but Allied Progress will continue working to pressure public servants to put consumer needs first.
