Overcoming extreme challenges, Minnesota achieved nation-leading success in 2020. It was an honor to be Secretary of State during such a test for our democracy.
The spread of COVID-19 meant that we had to administer a statewide election with public health in mind. We strongly urged people to consider voting from home, and they responded in record numbers.
Of the nearly 3.3 million people who voted in the general election, 58% voted early - mostly by mail. And thanks to a lot of hard work and planning, Minnesota had plenty of poll workers, ample PPE to make polling places safe, no conflicts near polling sites, and no credible reports of voter misconduct.
Minnesota is a model for the nation once again. For the third election in a row, Minnesota is #1 in America in voter turnout. At 79.96% of eligible voters, our 2020 turnout was not only the best in the country, but the highest in Minnesota since 1956.
Going forward, there are new and urgent challenges. Some people won’t accept the results of the election, and seem determined to undermine confidence in our entire election system. They use dangerous conspiracy theories as weapons. And now, I’m a target. It’s more than just attacks and name-calling. Conspiracy theorists have even started a “Stop Simon” fundraising page to raise money for lawsuits against me – designed to disrupt our election system.
