By electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris and evicting the current occupant of the White House, the American people chose compassion over hatred. Hope over fear. Progress over the status quo.
But Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ victory was just the beginning. As I have said before, their election was not the destination, it was the door to a better future for all of our communities; a chance to pursue bold, progressive policies like a People’s Justice Guarantee, a Green New Deal, and Medicare for All.
We’re going to continue centering people who have been ignored and left out for too long, in order to advance long-overdue change. In this past election, we expanded our Squad with the election of Mondaire Jones, Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, and others and I couldn’t be more excited to work with them in Congress.
I’m ready to keep fighting for bold legislation that matches the scale of the crises we face and guarantees economic, racial, social, and environmental justice for everyone.
Electing Joe and Kamala is only the first step toward bringing about the structural change our communities need — providing equitable COVID-19 relief, ensuring quality jobs and health care for all, transforming our criminal injustice system, and enacting bold policies to fight for climate justice.
It’s time to put power back in the hands of people. Our work, our advocacy, and our legislating must be centered on the lived experiences of grocery store clerks, nurses, teachers, bus drivers, farmworkers, and everyone in our communities. We can get there, but more remains to be done.
Thank you for your partnership and dedication to equity and justice for all.
In solidarity,
Ayanna Pressley
