Hi John,

This is giving me hope for 2021.

Since I sent the email below on 1 December, more than 800 people have signed up to give a few pounds a month to fund Greenpeace's work to protect the natural world.

In a year as challenging as this one has been, it's truly inspiring that hundreds of people from all over the country are generously chipping in.

The fundraising drive closes tomorrow night. So, if you'd still like to, these are last few hours to join with a few pounds a month to fund our campaigns next year to protect the oceans, safeguard forests and save the climate:

I also wanted to take this chance to say how grateful I am for everything Greenpeace supporters have done this year -- which is why I'm sending this to our whole email list today.

From signing petitions, to raising awareness on social media, through to writing to your local politicians about the issues impacting our natural world. Year after year, your tireless work keeps our people-powered movement growing stronger.

When the new year comes, I look forward to all of us facing it together, continuing our work to build a better world.

But meanwhile I hope you and your loved ones stay safe in these closing days of 2020, and have a chance to rest before the new year begins.

Fundraising Director, Greenpeace UK

Here's the email I sent on 1 December:

Hi Richard,

I want to be honest with you about how Greenpeace is funded.

Not everyone knows this, but we don't take money from big businesses or governments. Instead, we're fuelled by pounds chipped in by people like you.

Running Greenpeace this way means we don't have to answer to corporate donors or political interests. It means we can be independent minded, focusing our work on what's best for the planet.

But it also means we rely on small, monthly donations from people generously chipping in what they can.

That's why, as Greenpeace's Fundraising Director, I'm sending this out to our whole email list today. I'm hoping that 1,032 of you will come onboard with a monthly contribution this December. If we can reach that goal together, I'll be able to give Greenpeace's team the green light to dramatically scale up their campaigns in 2021. Can you join with a few pounds a month?

As I write this, it looks like the world is turning a corner on COVID-19. And maybe -- just maybe -- we can imagine a future free from this awful virus.

So as we look to next year, this is the moment we must ask ourselves -- what will the future look like?

It's a question that governments around the world will be asking too. Which is why, in 2021, we'll need to work together to get them to choose the right path - one where our world is rebuilt in a way that's not only more resilient to pandemics, but to climate change and the loss of nature too.

As Greenpeace UK's Fundraising Director, my hope is to give Greenpeace's team the green light to be more ambitious than ever -- so they can launch bigger, bolder campaigns to protect our oceans, safeguard forests and to save the climate. I know this year has been difficult, and not everyone can contribute right now. But if you're able to, can you give a few pounds a month to help secure more victories for our planet in 2021?

2020 has been a year none of us could have imagined -- one of untold challenges. But it's also been a year when so many of us have reflected on what really matters.

Together, we've dropped in food parcels for neighbours, and called up friends and family to show those we love how much they mean to us. We've seen over and over how critical it is that we work together, and how much we can achieve when we do.

The same goes for our natural world. Though there are huge challenges to come, and at times it might seem daunting, the future hasn't happened yet -- it is still ours to write.

With 2020 almost behind us, my hope is that we can look ahead to 2021 together, and rebuild a better world together -- one that future generations will be proud of.
