2020 has been a historically difficult year. As it draws to a close, we'd like to highlight the many ways that you, our donors and supporters, have helped us continue to serve the community despite the pandemic, social unrest, and economic difficulties the year brought. Here is a brief review of selected 2020 highlights.
- The year 2020 began like most other years - filled with promise.
- Central Missouri Community Action (CMCA) began working to develop a Financial Opportunity Program to support individuals and families with low-incomes in their journey toward financial stability.
- One of the first USDA applications processed by CMCA is approved!
- CMCA hires a Disaster Relief Coordinator to work with families impacted by the 2019 tornado in Cole county.
- CMCA launches its new website - www.cmca.us.
- COVID-19 causes everything to shut down, including Head Start centers.
- The closures prompt Head Start staff to collect and distribute necessities for families who rely on Head Start for support.
- Head Start teachers and Family Success Coaches begin to deliver programming virtually.
- Show Me Healthy Relationships also moves to an online delivery model.
- The Missouri Women's Business Center (MoWBC) works closely with small business owners to guide them through the application process for relief funds.
- The MoWBC also provides virtual workshops and online counseling to help small businesses move to an e-commerce platform.
- Head Start leadership begins working on a plan to safely return children to the classroom.
- Head Start teachers and Family Support Coaches continue to provide online programming.
- Foster Grandparent Program continues to support its volunteers and find creative ways to keep them engaged even though they can not work with children directly as they normally do.
- Community Organizers continue meetings with community partners and continue to serve clients.
- Energy Assistance continues to provide utility assistance to families.
- Community Organizers provide emergency care packages to families in their counties.
- Community Organizers conduct a Community Needs Assessment virtually.
- MoWBC launches a new website - www.mowbc.org
- CMCA partners with Callaway county to offer utility assistance to families impacted by COVID.
- Head Start Centers reopen with COVID safety procedures in place.
- Other programs continue virtually or with safety procedures in place.
- The MoWBC adds four new business coaches to its team to expand its ability to support entrepreneurship in rural and urban areas.
- The Weatherization Program gets an expanded budget and resumes home inspections and weatherization processes with COVID safety measures in place.
- Head Start adapts to offer its programming based on the county and city requirements around schools due to COVID-19.
- CMCA's request for $500,000 to support utility arrears is granted. Working with community partners including the City of Columbia, Ameren, Boone Electric, and others, the Boone Cares program is launched.
- Head Start building projects in Morgan, Benton, and Boone counties continue to move forward.
- Boone Cares applications are accepted. More than 700 households request support between mid -October and mid-December.
- Funds totaling $500,000 pay past due bills for electric, internet, gas, propane, sewer, trash, and water.
- The Second Annual Boonslick Education and Career Expo is held in Boonville hosting 29 exhibitors and 55 attendees!
- The Financial Opportunity Program moves forward. Staff to be hired to provide financial counseling.
- USDA loan program successfully allows families with low-incomes to purchase homes. So successful that additional staffing is needed to support the demand.
- CMCA exceeds its goal in raising $10,000 through CoMoGives to provide emergency funds to support families working toward financial stability.
The new year brings new hope and opportunities to build upon and expand the work done in 2020. We know that these accomplishments are made possible because of your support as a partner.
