There was truly good news last week for anyone who still believes in democracy.
Since it happened on Christmas Eve — and the media was busy covering (1) Donald Trump’s petulant refusal to sign the coronavirus relief bill that Congress had finally passed and (2) his absurd pardoning of assorted war criminals and MAGA loyalists — many folks may have missed it.
So I wanted to share it with you here, because it is just one example — a powerful example, at that — of what you and Public Citizen can do and are doing together.
Public Citizen — as part of our ongoing lawsuit challenging disruptions at the United States Postal Service — is working to ensure that mailed votes are counted in the critical runoff election for Georgia’s two Senate seats.
- As you know, Georgia is conducting a runoff election for both of its Senate seats, the outcome of which will determine whether Democrats or Republicans control that chamber of Congress next year.
- Mail delivery all across America has been disrupted ever since Donald Trump installed a mega-donor named Louis DeJoy to run the Postal Service.
- Those disruptions threatened to delay delivery of ballots to and from voters in the Georgia runoff election, where record numbers of people are voting by mail due to the pandemic.
- The result could have been disenfranchisement on a massive scale.
As part of litigation by Public Citizen and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund on behalf of the NAACP, and working in collaboration with Vote Forward, we reached an agreement with the USPS to expedite the delivery of mailed ballots to and from voters in Georgia through the duration of the runoff election.
I’m very proud of the work Public Citizen does day in and day out — when it does, and when it does not, make front-page headlines.
We generally don’t crow about our successes. (Or stew about it when we lose a battle — we just come back the next day even more committed to winning the war against corporate power and government inaction).
But this is a notable win.
For voters in Georgia.
For the Senate.
For democracy itself.
And for showing what we can do when we work together on this shared project called Public Citizen.
This is the time of year when many people support causes and organizations that are doing important work.
So I’m asking you:
Please make a year-end donation today and help give Public Citizen the real-world resources it takes to keep fighting for progress.
RIGHT NOW, ANYTHING YOU CONTRIBUTE WILL BE MATCHED DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR.
Even better, join our popular Sustainers program as a monthly donor and your contribution will be matched dollar-for-dollar each and every month for an entire year!
Contribute now.
Thank you for reading this.
Thank you for anything you can chip in.
And thank you for everything you do as part of Public Citizen.
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
P.S. If donating today is not right for you, that’s okay. I hope you’ll understand that I have to ask from time to time — especially at this time of year — so that we have the resources to carry out all the essential work we have to do together.
