John,

In the weeks after my sweet little Daniel's murder, my wife Jackie and I would literally collapse on the floor in a heap, sobbing together.

In those terrible moments, our family looked the opposite of what you might think: It was our surviving children, James and Natalie, who would find us and wrap their arms around us until we could stand again.

I still feel that pain every single day. Even now, after eight years, this heartbreak isn't any easier to bear. But I resist the urge to break down – I push through and do this work, even during times like this, when it's the most painful, because I'll do whatever it takes to prevent other families from feeling this agony.

That's why it's so important to me that we secure every dollar of our $490,000 year-end match – so we can protect more children like Daniel from gun violence.

We only have until tomorrow to reach our goal, and we're still falling very short. Can I count on you to give now to have your tax-deductible gift doubled so we can save more lives next year?

Please rush $10, or as much as you can, to Sandy Hook Promise right now, and your tax-deductible gift will go twice as far toward protecting children from gun violence in 2021.

I still can't wrap my head around the fact that Daniel is gone forever. I look at his empty chair at the kitchen table and can't believe he'll never sit there again. But what keeps me going in those moments is knowing I can still honor his too-short life by protecting other children from gun violence.

More than 12 million students and educators have learned how to recognize the warning signs of gun violence and how to get help through our no-cost Know the Signs programs. We've already averted multiple school shooting threats and saved many precious lives, and I know we can prevent more tragedies if we meet this final match goal.

Thank you for helping me do that today.

Mark Barden (Daniel's father)
