On Friday, #TeamAndom participated in the #GlobalClimateStrike. Volunteers and many of my former students joined us to stand up for climate justice. We're proud to be active in a global movement, and we're proud to have so many in our movement as well.
Greta Thunberg is Right!
My former students and I at this weekend's #GlobalClimateStrike in New York.
The Global Climate Strike should remind all representatives that averting impending climate disaster will require international mobilization immediately.
Foreign policy is central to a climate solution. One cannot be a leader on climate when they are also a leading proponent of war and US primacy. There are many Democrats who now advocate for a Green New Deal but don't acknowledge the environmental impacts of their militarism: the carbon-gushing bombers killing in the forever wars they support, or the 800+ military bases around the world that pollute others' land and water.
Switching to renewable energy is about more than lowering carbon emissions. It's about dismantling the current geopolitical constructs that support the notion that access to oil must be maintained at all costs. Rep. Engel's militaristic record precludes any possibility of him genuinely leading on a Green New Deal. The US military is the world's largest institutional polluter. And among large countries, the US remains the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide per person.
