A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...

** NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
Happy New Year! As we ready for 2021, I wish you the best of all that the New Year brings. I encourage you to continue to share your time & talents with all those in need in our community. It’s been quite a journey this past year and finally, we can start to see the light at the end of the “pandemic tunnel.”
In this week’s letter, I’ll highlight some Northville New Year’s activities from yesteryear and touch on some happenings in The Ville these past 12 months. But first, two important announcements:

PLEASE TAKE THE MASTER PLAN SURVEY!
The Planning Commission invites you to take part in the second survey for the Master Plan update of the Cady St., Racetrack and S. Center St. subareas. The survey is designed to consolidate public input for a shared vision of redevelopment. The survey is open until Jan. 31.

THE NORTHVILLE COMMUNITY SUPPORT FUND IS NOW ESTABLISHED
* The Northville Community Support Fund (NCSF) was established to help the community launch innovative and ground-breaking projects. This was the result of feedback and suggestions from many of the local Chamber businesses and others in the Northville area. The NCSF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
* The NCSF website will be up and running in early January and presents the larger story of our mission, origins and community works in progress. Online donations will be accepted through the site.
* For those who may wish to donate for the 2020 calendar year, please mail checks to:
+ The NCSF, 41700 Six Mile Road – Suite 101, Northville, MI 48168
* The City of Northville is clearly on a positive trajectory. Financial support for special projects that enhance our social and economic well-being is more important than ever. Thank you!

Now let’s take a look at the latest NEWS …
* By now you know … Congressional leaders approved a $900 Billion coronavirus relief deal last week for millions of citizens & small business owners in the country. (CNBC)

* At the same time, Michigan passed a $465 Million COVID-19 relief package. (Michigan.gov)
* COVID-19 vaccines have now been given to your local first responders & health care workers. Our senior community is also being scheduled for vaccinations. (WayneCounty.com) As we move forward, thank you for your consideration of taking the vaccine when your time comes.
* The Downtown Northville Social District has evolved this winter with the theme of “HEAT IN THE STREETS.” It has certainly come alive with socially-distanced open-air dining pods, vendor stands and many restaurants transforming into covered outdoor dining areas. Come ring in the New Year in downtown Northville … let’s make a socially distanced night of it!
* COVID-19 CONFIRMED CASES: Northville has had 147 cases/7 fatalities, Township 1271/40, Michigan 524K/13.0K, Nation 19.7M/341K, Global 82M/1.8M. (CDC)

Now let’s transition to some historic New Year’s Eves that were highlighted in the Northville Record:
1869 – A fabulous New Year’s Eve Ball was held at the Ambler House at Main and Center.
1894 – The Seth Thomas Clock expert came to town to ready the Clock in the Tower, which still reaches to the sky at the old Methodist Church where the Stamp Peddler is today. The clock rang for the first time New Year’s Day 1895, with a Northville Foundry Bell in its tower.
1909 – There was a community “North Pole Dancing Party” on New Year’s Eve at the Princess Rink across from where CVS is today. It featured colored flashing lights, confetti and free sleigh rides for all attendees.

2020 - It’s been quite a Year!…Happenings in the Northville Community that come to mind:
* Sustainability Team Founded – In February, a Sustainability Committee was formed to initiate efforts that would help and guide Northville toward becoming a more sustainable city. More about the team and their work can be found on the City website: Northville Sustainability Team ([link removed]) .
* City Goes ZOOM – In March, the state launched emergency efforts in order to battle the Pandemic, and our 27 Boards & Commissions have been meeting via Zoom ever since with strong community participation.
* Big Road Rehab – In the spring, we started 14 road construction projects in your neighborhoods…not only rebuilding our Streets but starting to replace a 100-year-old infrastructure on our 26 miles of roads.
* Marriage by the Mayor – Starting in May as your Justice of the Peace, it was truly my pleasure to officiate a total of 20 weddings at the Mill Race, who offered an “alternative to Covid” with smaller, intimate ceremonies for couples to tie the knot.
* Peaceful Rallies – Rallies for Black Lives Matter and Clean Water for Michigan were active in town and took place at our Ford Field green space.
* Community Cooperation – Throughout the year, we in the community (City of Northville & Northville Township) have been working closely together for the benefit of all our citizens. Examples include the Fish Hatchery Park restoration, COVID response teams and our Community Center.
* Task Forces Launched – This fall we were overwhelmed by the response of many passionate citizens wanting to be involved in three Task Force opportunities. They are now diligently working for the benefit of Ford Field, the Rouge River Restoration & River Walk and the future of our Farmers’ Market.
* Master Plan Update – Also during this year, future development plans have been thoughtfully reviewed by the Planning Commission as they opened up the Master Plan to address the Cady St., Racetrack and S. Center St. subareas. More than 1,000 citizens have provided input through the survey process and informational sessions & videos.
* Communication as a Priority – Since I took office, weekly communications through these letters and monthly presentations through virtual Town Hall meetings have been a top priority. And, as many of you know, I welcome daily communications from our citizens through email and my cell. Let’s continue to stay connected and move forward together.
* The New Social District – Starting in June, the Northville Social District was established and truly became a “movement” the entire community rallied behind. Northville was one of the very first to close streets to create a social district, with background music and the chance to stroll in the open air (while socially- distanced and/or masked-up). We expanded outdoor seating for our restaurants and provided the ability for retailers to display their wares outside.
* Heat in the Streets – In December, the City transitioned to a “Heat in the Streets” theme for our downtown businesses with heating pods, vendor stands, and restaurants’ heated outdoor covered areas.
* With the input and participation of the community and City Council (Marilyn Price, Barb Moroski-Browne, Patrick Giesa & Sam Ekong), we together as citizens and as community leaders have accomplished a great deal in 2020… All for the Town we love.

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank each and every one of you for assisting Northville through a difficult Pandemic journey in 2020. I know many of you have helped our youth, our seniors, Civic Concern and our local businesses, and I sincerely thank you for all you have done.
Make your New Year’s resolutions, keep the community we love close in your thoughts and stay connected to those you love.

Let’s get ready for an amazing 2021 & Keep that Northville Faith while Masking up, practicing social distancing, and being Safe!

Happy New Years!

Brian Turnbull
